Movie Review – Toy Story 4

The original ‘Toy Story’ is the film that made me want to be an animator. I studied it in college and even have a degree in it. ‘Toy Story 2’ was obsessed over by my college classmates and I in the computer labs between classes. I bought ‘Toy Story 3’ for my nephews and introduced them to Buzz and Woody when they were still in diapers. This series holds a lot of memories for me so I was excited for ‘Toy Story 4’ even though I felt that 3 ended the series perfectly.

‘Toy Story 4’ has so many things that  I love. Creepy ventriloquist dolls. A carnival. An antique store. Keanu Reeves. Even a tiny ode to ‘The Shining’. I felt as if the film was made for me many times while watching it. I loved every minute.

Woody finds himself feeling useless so he overcompensates by helping his new kid fit in on her first day of school. What ensues is a string of events that could have been prevented had everyone just listened to Woody. I was hoping that Buzz could have his own arc, but his just walks around being Buzz. Just as dumb as his original self before he realized he was made in Taiwan.

What surprised me the most was Bo Peep. They really made her a well rounded character. The addition of Keanu Reeves and Christina Hendricks is perfect. Christina should do more voice work because it’s amazing how well she brought her doll to life with both strength and vulnerability without being whiny.

I’ve seen 4 twice now, and it was even better the second time around. Take your kids. You’ll love it as much as they do.
