Freaks is one of those rare gems that was completely misinterpreted in its time. In 1932, it was deemed too offensive for audiences. It failed both critically and commercially. In the 1960’s, people realized what this film truly was; not the offensive film it was thought to be, but a film that humanized the performers deemed freaks and made the normal people the monsters. The film paved the way for shows like American Horror Story: Freak Show in modern day pop culture which also made the normal folk the true villain.
