Movie Review – The Favourite

Olivia Colman. Emma Stone. Rachel Weisz. Three strong actresses at the top of their craft in emotional roles that highlight their strengths. The Favourite is full of dark, sardonic humor. It centers around two women (Weisz, and Stone) vying to Queen Anne’s favor (Olivia Colman) in a play for political power.

The film is presented in an inventive way splitting the story into chapters. The dialogue is genius. British wit shines through even in the darker sequences.

Director Yorgos Lanthimos had me at hello with this movie. His other recent films, The Lobster and The Killing of Sacred Deer, didn’t really do much for me so I was pleasantly surprised that I instantly fell in love with The Favourite.

Side note – I’m super excited to see what Olivia Colman brings to Netflix’s The Crown now that I saw her performance in this.
