The sixth installment of this franchise is a surprisingly heartfelt take on motherhood. More specifically, what a mother would do to protect her child from the worst evil imaginable.
It follows Gemma who, as a child, watched her mother descend into someone scary and then commit what looked like suicide. Now a mother herself, she starts experiencing the same things her mother did – being brought into the further by an evil demon because it wants here to bring him into the human world. There’s just one problem with his plan. Elise, who died in 2011 in a previous film, is still in the further saving people like Gemma from the demons and helping them stop this activity.
This new film feels fresher than the last two, giving the main character deeper meaning. It didn’t include Elise’s two helpers from the original trilogy which works to the films advantage. It lets it operate on its own level without needing the context that those two characters would have needed.
The demon in this film isn’t really anything new except he doesn’t just want to be in the human world for himself. He wants to bring all the other dead, the people who did terrible things in life and ended up a demon in the further, to the human world. Gemma’s ability not only brings things out of the further, but brings them there from the human world. And what she manages to bring to the further to stop these demons and save her own daughter is pretty impressive.
If you’re a fan of the Insidious films, this proves itself to be among the better ones. It’s kind of like if the third film married Lights Out – the film starring Teresa Palmer. A decent addition to a long running franchise that many had counted as worn out.
