You know what I’ve always wanted from new Star Wars movies? Some good action. A space battle. A little good vs. evil. Characters that make me root for them. A laugh here and there. Practical effects when it comes to some creatures. And not a Skywalker in sight. Guess what Jon Favreau gave us?
Mando and Grogu are on the hunt for people working with remants of the Empire as the New Republic struggles to survive. He is sent to collect Jabba the Hutt’s son, Rotta, at the bequest of his twin aunt and uncle as they are willing to trade him for knowledge on who an Imperialist named Coin really is. Mando does what Mando does and figures out who Coin is without having to return Rotta to the Hutts as they likely have ulterior motives, and sets in motion a sequence of events that lands him and Grogu in a fight for survival against the Hutts.
In a galaxy that has been so driven by the Skywalker Saga, it is nice to see a one off film that doesn’t even mention the name. No lightsabers. No Jedi. Just a Mandalorian and his found family kid, Grogu, on a heist adventure to different planets. There are hints of the Empire, but it isn’t at the forefront. This allows Mando to stand out as a character who will always do the right thing even if it means not getting a payday.
I’m not sure why critics hated on this so much. It has exciting action sequences accentuated by Grogu having a quiet survival adventure as he tries to keep his friend alive. The old protecting the young and the young protecting the old. These two characters play off each other so well that it’s hard to not enjoy their time together. It has the heist sensibilities of Rogue One, the comedic timing of Return of the Jedi, and the combination of special effects and some practical creature effects like The Force Awakens. The best of different eras of Star Wars.
Is this as good as Rogue One or The Empire Strikes Back? No. But is it superior to The Phantom Menace and Solo? Hell yeah, it is. I’d probably put this in the top five in the five spot, but I love the Mandalorian character so maybe I’m a little biased. It does lean a little heavy on special effects when it comes to creatures in one sequence, but I can overlook it. I enjoyed everything else so much that it didn’t much bother me. Or maybe the soundtrack is so wonderful that I didn’t mind the CGI creature fight sequence, and the soundtrack really is that great. Memorable as the original trilogy.
If you’re near an IMAX screen, see this film on one. It’s worth the experience.
4 out of 5 stars.
