Movie Review – Hoppers

I don’t know what led to the creative insanity behind this movie, but I loved every single minute of it. It starts with Mable, a little girl with a penchant for rescuing classroom animals. Essentially, she’s like me she when I was ten. A little bit of a rebel, but all heart. With her grandmother’s help, she finds peace with nature.

If you’ve see ‘Up’, then you know where that leads. Mable, now eighteen, must find away forward without her grandmother’s guidance. Problem is, the Mayor of her town, Jerry, wants to build a highway through her favorite nature reserve. Mable desperately tries to find a way to stop it which leads her to finding out one of her teachers has come up with a way to put her mind in a robot beaver allowing her to fit in with animals.

Problem solved, right? Nope. What transpires is a hysterical romp in the woods as Mable finds out that there are kings of the animals. Of insects. Of snakes. Of fish. Of birds. And of mammals. All her plotting leads to worse circumstances than she intended, and she and the Mayor have to find a way to work together to stop it.

This film is like if Avatar took place in The Wild Robot universe and the villain ends up being a psychotic robot controlled by a mentally ill bug. Yes, this film is that off the rocker. And it’s amazing. It shouldn’t work, but it does and it has a lot of heart. Themes of there being good in everyone and learning to work together for the betterment of all involved run throughout. If we’d only listen to one another.

As usual, the animation is beautiful and impressive and the voice acting sincere. Pixar at the top of its game. Back in form with the off the wall films that made the studio loved by so many. If you’ve been a fan since the beginning, there’s Easter eggs from ‘The Incredibles’ and ‘A Bugs Life’. And a shark. The shark is absurd and perfect and I’m still laughing about it.

Take the kids and you’ll enjoy this one as well. There’s jokes for the adults too. Flap around and find out.

4.5 out of 5 stars.
