Dungeon crawler Carl and his cat Princess Donut have entered the fourth floor of the dungeon which the game makers have called the Iron Tangle. This floor features many different kinds of trains, each stopping on different levels and stations. Mobs and bosses are peppered throughout included a class of mobs that are addicted to some drug and the withdrawals from the drug will eventually lead to these mobs becoming more dangerous.
This floor marks the first time that crawler groups can work together and Carl takes advantage of this by adding as many as he can to his chat so he can communicate with them when they are far apart. For their own survival, many try to work together to find stairways down to the next level before the dungeon level collapses.
The title of this book comes from the item that Carl receives from the game’s AI. It is a journal of sorts where previous owners from previous games have written notes on everything from how to kill mobs or bosses to what potions or weapons work best. Carl has to keep the book secret, and when some of his ideas come directly out of what he has read in it, other people start asking questions. I’m sure this will come into play heavily as the series of books continue.
While I found the maze of trains in this book to be confusing and a bit convoluted, the way that Dinniman tells his story makes up for it. There is so much humor and irreverent sarcasm peppered throughout that I often laugh out loud when listening to the audiobook. My favorite theme here is Carl not giving up. His entire attitude becomes, “You will not break me. Fuck you all.” Even as the AI gives him shitty gifts. Even as other crawlers turn on him. Even as the conglomerate of corporations running the game he is stuck in try to kill him repeatedly in the most sadistic ways possible. Even as the game intentionally tries to make him look crazy to other crawlers. Carl won’t give up. He won’t stop surviving. He will never stop trying to take the conglomerate down from the inside. That’s my mantra now as the world continues to suck in real life.
You will not break me.
