I’ve been a fan of Tim Burton’s films since I was a child. Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and Ed Wood were mainstays for my family growing up. The Nightmare Before Christmas remains to this very day my favorite animated film. His adaptation of Alice in Wonderland makes my heart happy and it inspired me to make some drawings inspired by it.
Anne Hathaway’s performance as the White Queen fully captures the role and she adds a little Anne Hathaway flare along the way. It was just a few years later that people accused her of being fake during the awards season when she was nominated for Les Miserables, and that laughable accusation always sends me back to her turn in Alice in Wonderland when there were actually undertones in her performance about the barely controlled emotions she brought to the White Queen’s demeanor. The drawing is available here.
Helena Bonham Carter’s turn as the Red Queen is so very perfect in every single way that I believe she should have been in the Best Supporting Actress conversation that year. Alas, she was not, but her performance in this adaptation lives rent free in my head. The drawing is available for purchase here.
This incantation of the Cheshire Cat voiced by Stephen Fry is both a departure from the pink and purple version done previously by Disney and an improvement on it actually feeling like an enigmatic cat. You can view the artwork for sale here.
Johnny Depp’s take on the Mad Hatter took me some time to love. At first, I though he was too soft. Too childlike. Then, as the character grew on me, I began to realize that sometimes when you lose everything as a child, you can’t help but blame yourself. It made me sympathize with him and Johnny Depp’s take on the character makes more sense now. You can purchase the drawing here.
