Movie Review – The Conjuring: Last Rites

The film begins when Ed and Lorraine investigate one of their earliest cases when Lorraine is pregnant with Judy. They encounter an evil mirror and Lorraine goes into early labor. Judy is stillborn but their prayers give her miraculous life.

Fast forward 22 years to 1986 and a family in Pennsylvania has bought the mirror at a flea market. Strange things occur and even after they dispose of it, their life becomes scary and difficult. Ed and Lorraine are mostly retired and watching Judy fall in love when they are drawn back in to this case and find Judy’s life is tied to the mirror.

The real heart of this film is what makes them all so relatable. The love between Ed and Lorraine carried by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson’s solid chemistry is so tangible that it makes them real to the viewer. The same goes for the family suffering at the hands of whatever demon they are investigating. This new family, two parents with four girls who live with their paternal grandparents, is so in the 80s era that it threw me back to my own childhood. A cohesive bunch in big glasses and old school toys.

There are a few decent jump scares, but the real strength of this film is the juxtaposition between the happy almost retirement of the Warrens and the descent into haunted misery of the family owning the mirror. It takes its time, never giving too much away too early. The scares in this one are earned, and the reward is seeing both families move on with their lives with love into a brighter future.

I loved seeing all the throwbacks and cameos to previous films. They weren’t heavy handed but there for those of us who showed up for each go. The effect the Warrens had on so many families through their faith and love is something we should all strive for.

This is probably my second favorite in the series after the original. I’m going to miss Patrick and Vera as Ed and Lorraine, but it was a perfect send off for two real world people who are seen by many as leaders in paranormal investigating.

4 out of 5 stars.
