I hope the major studios are paying attention. The marketing for Weapons was genius. Ambiguous trailer that was put in front of the right movies at the theater. It gave us just enough to pique our interest without giving anything away. And people showed up for it. Positive word of mouth will probably give it a good second weekend. Market more movies like this, please.
I’m going to do my review like they did the trailer. I’m only going to give you enough info on the plot to write the review, and leave the rest for you to discover in the theater as it was meant to be. Some movies have to be seen to be believed.
When seventeen second graders from the same class mysteriously walk out of their homes in the middle of the night, locals are shocked. They want someone to blame and they blame the teacher, Justine (Julia Garner). She and one of the kid’s fathers (Josh Brolin) investigate separately as the police seem to have no leads.
The film is told like an anthology, with several segments told from a different character’s point of view. Each segment weaves into the segments that came before until it reaches the third act. I’m not giving it away, but I will say that Amy Madigan puts in one hell of a performance here. I’ve never seen anything like it and I’m so very happy that she took this on. The only thing I can compare it to is Nicolas Cage in Longlegs. Just brilliant.
Josh Brolin and Julia Garner are at the top of their games as well. What a summer for Julia Garner. First Fantastic Four and now Weapons. She also impresses me in Wolf Man, a film that wasn’t that great but she elevated it with her performance. Put her in all the horror. I’m here for it.
Zach Cregger is becoming a must see director, especially if he keeps this up. First Barbarian with a huge surprise and now Weapons. This new film is like Longlegs and Antlers had a horror movie baby. I believe this is the Malignant of 2025. The horror film that people are going to say, “what did I just watch?”
Go see this on the big screen. It deserves to be seen that way.
4.5 out of 5 stars. More of this, Cregger. Give us more.
