Movie Review – Together

Alison Brie and Dave Franco, who are married in real life, star as Tim and Millie, a long term couple moving out of the city. He is a struggling musician and she is a teacher. Their move is a point of contention since he wanted to stay in the city. Their new house is surrounded by forest and hiking trails. While hiking on one of these trails, the inadvertently fall into a cave during heavy rain. Tim drinks from the pool of water within the cave which ends up causing some changes within his body.

Their neighbor, Jamie, who also teaches at Millie’s new school, tells them about a cult that once had a church by the cave. An earthquake caused it to fall into the cave so the cult is gone with nowhere to worship. As Millie and Tim’s relationship descends into bitterness and codependency, Millie seeks help from Jamie who gives her a glass of water while she is at his house. The water, it turns out, is from the cave and Jamie was part of that cult.

Now that Millie and Tim have both consumed the cave water, their codependency goes full on body horror as every time they are in touch with each other, their skin molds itself together. In the end, they have to decide to let nature take its course or struggle with separation.

This film has some great horrifying moments. I was sitting in the theater cringing from the perceived pain on screen. That is the strength of this film as Franco and Brie put in great performances. I think their real life relationship also worked to their advantage because of the comfort level they have with each other. David Harriman is also great as the neighbor who seems great until you see him for what he is.

If you follow me on social media, you’ve probably heard me talk in length about how Midsommar works both as a horror movie and a breakup movie. Together works in the same capacity. It tells the story of a toxic relationship, but tells it in a codependent way as opposed to a breakup story like Midsommar.

If body horror is your thing and you enjoy a good gross out and a few wtfs along the way, check this one out. You won’t regret it.

4 out of 5 stars.
