I’ve spoken out against a lot of live action remakes of beloved animated movies, especially recent animated movies so I wasn’t really on board with this. But….
This remake really surprised me. It somehow manages to maintain the whimsy and fun of the animated version whilst giving great action and a whole lot of heart. The filmmakers obviously love this story and it shows in every frame.
The special effects, which are usually one of my complaints when they have to animate so much for live action remakes, are effective in the sense that the playfulness of Toothless is set against the real world in a realistic way. It’s not disconcerting, which is usually the case in these kind of adaptations. The other dragons are done well too, and the fire sequences are more frightening with the realism. I enjoyed having that extra tension in this film. Made it more high stakes.
While the whole cast is great, Gerard Butler stands out with such a tough yet heartwarming performance that I missed him when he wasn’t on screen, but not so much that it detracts from the movie.
Take the kiddos, but note that this isn’t for three year olds. Give them the animated one until they can handle a little more realism.
