Movie Review – Materialists

Dakota Johnson plays a matchmaker for rich people. She is one of the best to do the job because she makes sure all the right boxes are checked. Problem is, she doesn’t date anyone herself, at least until she meets the brother of one of the pair she matched into marriage.

Pedro Pascal believes he is the perfect match for her. He has enough money to pay for the expensive restaurants she loves and has a $12 million NYC apartment. Their chemistry is genuine, be she’s not in love with him. She’s in love with her ex.

Chris Evans is her ex, a struggling theatre actor too poor to pay for parking, let alone expensive restaurants. He lives in a shared apartment with two roommates who are less grownup than he is. Their chemistry is great too, but she wants more than he can offer. She grew up poor and doesn’t want to stay that way.

When one of her matches goes awry and something awful happens to the woman in that situation, it makes her question her entire matchmaking existence. Maybe it isn’t just about math. Numbers. Checked boxes. Maybe you never know what someone is capable of by looking at answers to dating questions. And it isn’t Pedro Pascal who notices that something is wrong. It’s her ex who is there for her. Who knows her so well that he can sense when she isn’t okay. That she’s having an existential crisis.

Isn’t that what we all want in the person who grows old with us? To have someone who knows when we need to talk or a hug. To have that person who knows dating and marriage don’t have to be transactional.

Celine Song hits all the right vibes directing this quiet film about the struggles and dangers of modern day dating. Dakota Johnson’s subtle seriousness is perfect for the character who often treats her clients like food and wine pairings. I enjoyed her arc as she tries to make the choice between love or money, just like the women she sends out on dates with men that only checked a few boxes.

4 out of 5 broken hearts… I mean stars.
