Movie Review – Final Destination: Bloodlines

I’ve never been much of a fan of this series. There were some cool kills along the way, yes, but I found the many of the characters to be mostly unlikable. Or at least not likable enough for me to root for especially after Ali Larter was done with the series. I wasn’t expecting much from this which is probably why I found this film so surprising. Really, I just showed up for Tony Todd.

A woman and her boyfriend go into a restaurant built at the top of a tall building that only exists for the restaurant. When she sees the sequence of events during which everyone dies horrifically in a premonition, she stops the incident dead. Everyone goes on with their lives. Right?

Years later, her college age granddaughter starts dreaming of the night of the premonition. When she questions her parents about it, and her aunt and uncle, they warn her to stay away from the grandmother, Iris, because she’s apparently crazy. Obsessed with death. In reality, she researched all the survivors of her premonition and and watched them all die in the same order as they would have otherwise. Death wasn’t done with them, or their descendants who would never have existed if she hadn’t saved everyone. Now her family is next.

For the first time with this series I actually enjoyed watching this. Both Iris and her granddaughter are women I can root for and there are a couple of twists in regards to the family history that I didn’t see coming. Even the granddaughter’s cousins are worth sitting through this.

Don’t worry if you’re a huge fan of Final Destination. The deaths are still gruesome and unforgiving. The premonition goes into great detail and feels like a whole movie on its own (high compliment from me). And Tony Todd’s scene is wonderful. He has a lot to say and its the perfect way for us to say goodbye to this horror icon.

4 out of 5 stars.
