Book Review – Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros

Dragons. Spicy love stories. Fiery protagonists. What's not to love?

I fully admit to having read all three of these bloody, snarky books about war dragons obsessively until I finished eyeing every last word. This third installment did not disappoint.

Violet, Xaden, and their riot of war college cadets and dragons go on an adventure to find Andarna’s breed of dragon which left the continent centuries earlier. Violet also secretly searches for a cure for Xaden who is slowly turning into a venin. Their adventure takes them to several islands with vastly different cultures. When they do finally happen across Andarna’s kind, the dragons are less than welcoming and send them home empty handed. No cure. No dragon of their breed to fix their ward stone so they can fix the wards in Aretia. At home, the venin attack and Violet and Xaden both know the sacrifices they must make. To their own detriment.

What I love about this series is the pacing. The books are full of action and spicy love stories and fiery protagonists. The world building is stellar. Relationships are tested. Each character brings their own unique personality to the story. And the dragons. Man, do I love reading about those dragons.

There is a moment in this book where one of the characters can transfer power from one person to another without turning into a venin. If you’ve not read the first two books, venin drain the magic out of everything and leave behind desiccated land and dead bodies. This improper use of magic destroys your soul and leaves you empty to what is good in the world. I won’t lie. When Violet notices that her friend’s ability to transfer magic and power from person to person does not turn her into a venin, and then Violet promptly forgets about it without thinking through, I may have yelled into the pages of the book. For that could be the cure for Xaden.

That said, since this book ends on a cliffhanger, I’m hoping that this plot point becomes a bigger deal in the next book. Which I can’t wait to read. So I hope Rebecca Yarros is at her computer right now giving us her next installment. Guess I’ll have to fill my time catching up on the other books on my shelves until then.

Five out of five stars.
