Movie Review – Freaky Tales

I knew nothing about this film except that starred Ben Mendelsohn and Pedro Pascal. I’ll be honest. That was why I saw it. Two of my faves in one film? I’m in.

In Oakland, CA in 1987, four stories come together to tell what one night was like for several groups of people. There’s a punk rock club that fights back against Nazi worshiper attacks. Two up and coming. rappers who get invited to big show to perform. A debt collector looking to retire does one last job only to have is pregnant wife get shot. And a shady cop who doubles as a mafia type and also happens to be the father of one of the Nazis and the boss of the debt collector. This all happens during game 4 of the NBA finals during which the mafia steals from several players while they are at the game and one loses family members because of it. He goes on a rampage of revenge with a bunch of cool Japanese weapons.

At first, I really didn’t know where it was headed. I almost gave up on it, but the second half is better than the first half. And I’ll never not love punk rock kids taking out some Nazi sympathizers. What makes these takes freaky is the green lightening that frequents the night. Magic was in the air, especially when the NBA player astral projects his violent revenge on the Oakland mafia.

This film is a little funny and a lot of crazy, outrageous gore. Pascal and Mendelsohn don’t disappoint. Their characters are the most interesting, though I would have liked to see the punk rocking kids get more screen time.

Three and a half out of five stars.
