I jumped right into this after finishing the first book in the series. I mean, I had to know where this story was going. Whether Xaden and Violet end up together. If they are able to convince their fellow cadets that evil creatures exist outside the safety to their boundaries. And that their leaders were lying about it. All these things happen, and so much more.
Violet has to work at forgiving Xaden for lying to her whilst Xaden must find a way to get back into Violet’s good graces. It is an ongoing battle between them for they are both stubborn and carry a lot of issues from their past. Then there is the leadership intentionally keeping them apart as Xaden has graduated their war college and Violet still has two years of training left.
In addition to all of this, the new cadets have arrived bringing new drama as there are assassins hidden within them. Violet and the cadets who survived the trap set for them at the last book are all targets now. Plus, Liam’s sister sloan has arrived and she hates Violet for she believes Violet is at fault for Liam’s death. A complicated mess made worse a new instructor who wants nothing more than to torture any information he can out of Violet.
And then there’s the ending of this book which I won’t ruin for you but it’s a shock. Another thing for Violet to survive and deal with. And it made me immediately start reading the third book after I finished this one.
These Empyrean novels by Rebecca Yarros are shockingly addicting. Unputdownable doesn’t seem to do them justice. These fantastical action packed, spicy novels told from the point of view of a sarcastic, funny badass are just about perfect. Highest recommendation all around.
Five out of five stars.
