Movie Review – Captain America: Brave New World

I liked this entry from Marvel, even if they fumbled the marketing by giving away too much in the trailers about the big reveal in the third act.

There’s no way to review this honestly without spoilers, so if you are looking to go into the movie without knowing anything, you should stop reading. You’ve been warned.

This film is like a direct sequel to both The Incredible Hulk and Eternals, both of which have gone largely ignored in the current MCU. Firstly, props to this film for finally acknowledging the celestial giant that appeared out of Earth’s surface in Eternals. The world’s powers are fighting over the resources that the new islands possess, most notably – adamantium.

Yes, that adamantium. I wanted to cheer out loud when they first uttered the word, even if the plot is partially about who gets to control it.

Second, Thaddeus Ross has become president and will become red Hulk toward the end of the film (the trailers gave this away, so no shock there). My issue with this isn’t the storyline at all. My issue was the marketing that let that cat out of the bag. I spent the whole movie knowing where it was headed, and it made an otherwise watchable movie far less exciting than it should have been for a first time watch. If you’re going for a big reveal in your finale, don’t put it in the trailer even if you think it’ll put butts in the seats.

Sam is great as Cap, and while I think Bucky as Cap would have made for a more emotional redemption character arc, I also believe that Sam wanting acceptance whilst being disillusioned by the weight of it all makes for some great storytelling.

Harrison Ford is so very good as Ross as he genuinely tries to be a better human even when he is unwittingly manipulated by a character turned villain from The Incredible Hulk. I haven’t seen Ford this good in a movie in a while, so that alone is worth the ticket price.

There’s also a great returning character from The Incredible Hulk that I won’t give away here. It gave this film some real heart, and boy did it need it. That extra bit of heart really gave Ross a great arc.

If you follow my reviews or frequent my social media, then you know I’m a huge fans of Eternals and Shang Chi, so I’m adding this to the list of Marvel films I genuinely like, even if Marvel really messed up the marketing by giving it away beforehand.

Four out of five stars.
