Movie Review – Companion

Sometimes, it's human nature that truly destroys us.

This take on using AI robots as a companion (sex partner, chef, maid, whatever) dives into the negative aspects of the tech when it’s manipulated by users for their own means.

Much like the creator’s previous film, Barbarian, this film keeps throwing twists at you. A zig here. A zag over there. A WTF just happened around the next bend. In that respect, this film is a great watch.

Like every other movie she’s been in, it’s Sophie Thatcher’s emotional performance that really drew me in. There isn’t a moment when she’s on screen that I’m not dialed in to everything she is doing.

An enjoyable watch for me, though I wish I didn’t know about the AI plot ahead of time. Would have loved to go into that one blind. Otherwise, really liked this. It shows that the problem with AI robots isn’t the robots, but the humans who use them to do terrible things. Human nature at its worst. And it’s why we can’t have nice things.

4 out of 5 stars.
