As an artist, I do love when my go to authors write novels about artists. Its like watching one of my peers devolve into madness, because that is what most stories about artists art. A deep dive into whatever rabbit hole the artist made for themselves.
This novel doesn’t so much follow the artist, but the people around her. Her caregiver and friend. Her lovers. Her diary. As usual, Paula gives us both reliable narrators and unreliable ones in this book. Which one of these people can the reader trust as the plot points unfold throughout the story? A question I always love asking when I read a book like this.
The artist herself is an enigmatic, borderline unlikable person which is why there were so many people begging to be in her orbit. This always seems to be the case with those who are really talented in some fashion but find themselves used along the way.
I find both of the main narrators here to be untrustworthy, though only one of them proved me wrong by the end. I never knew what they were leaving out of their storytelling which made for surprising twists along the way. That’s not a complaint.
Four out of five stars.
