Movie Review – Anora

A profane deep dive into youthful discretions and Russian family violence.

When stripper and escort Anora (she goes by Ani) meets a young rich Russian, she is drawn into a world of wild, drug induced fun and last second trips to Vegas where she marries him on a whim. When his family finds out, all hell breaks loose and the guy turns out to be a bit of a dud. But Anora finds a way to survive.

Mikey Madison is great in this, the shining star in a profane film during which he has to fight through every scene. There’s never a moment when her mind isn’t thinking through the next move. And she essentially beats up two men twice her size, and does it believably which is impressive.

The film itself is entertaining enough, though the scenes of their youthful indiscretions go on for a bit too long in the beginning before they get caught. I was never bored, though, so don’t let a bunch of twenty-somethings doing drugs and living it up deter you. Or the profanity for that matter. There are more f-bombs than people in NYC, but it isn’t bothersome.

Four out of five stars.
