Movie Review – Speak No Evil

This film succeeds because the cast fully commits.

When an American couple living in England go on holiday in Europe, they meet Paddy and Ciara, a couple also from England who bring some much needed energy to their vacation. When Ben and Louise visit their new friends at the remote farm in the English countryside, they soon realize that their friends have nefarious motives and are not the people they thought they were.

This movie succeeds because the cast fully commits to the story. James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis in particular really bring the tension. The setting is also one of the high points. The farm on which much of the story takes place is barely holding itself together, much like Paddy and Ciaras’ personalities. Both characters are on the edge of violence and anything could set them off at any moment.

That said, this movie does not have a strong enough of a third act to live up to the build up that the filmmakers so painstakingly put together during the middle of the film. McAvoy really brings the maniacal violence though, both physically and mentally. An unstoppable malevolent force that I would never want to come into contact with.

Three and a half out of five stars, mostly because McAvoy is so intense in this.
