Book Review – The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix

Not Grady Hendrix's best novel, but certainly readable and unputdownable.

This novel follows Lynnette, a “final girl” who is part of a support group for final girls, now women trying to live adult lives. When one of their ranks dies suddenly, Lynnette lets her paranoia get the best of her and begins thinking someone is after all of them. Soon, she realizes she was right to be paranoid and tries desperately to safe the other members of the group.

In usual Grady Hendrix style, this book is a vibrant world in which the horror movies we all know and love are based on real life experiences, and the women who survived them all learned to cope with their PTSD in different ways. While I find Lynnette’s character to be mostly unlikable, I think Hendrix meant her to be flawed in ways that make her character arc more memorable.

This was not my favorite Grady Hendrix novel, but that should not take away from how good it is. My main complaint is that I wanted to know more about the other women in the support group, but the entire book is told from Lynnette’s perspective. Give me more of those other women, and this would have been so very good.

Four out of five stars. Readable horror novel perfect for spooky season.
