Movie Review – Alien: Romulus

The newest addition in the Alien franchise utilizes a youthful cast, great cinematography, and effective sound design to create an atmospheric, claustrophobic horror film. It takes its time which allows you to get to know the characters before they unwittingly walk into one of Weyland Corps. science experiments on an abandoned ship.

My only real issue with the film is that the characters leave a planet controlled by Weyland Corp. who apparently don’t have the technology to prevent their workers from leaving. Or they just don’t care. And if an abandoned Weyland facility is floating nearby, why not intercept it, Weyland? But, sure, let a bunch of young adults steal a ship to get off world to salvage the larger ship. Okay. Why not.

Everything else is masterful. Acting is spot on. Effects are beautiful to look at, with the small exception of the final space battle where a couple shots made it hard to tell what was going on.

Fede Alvarez gives us a scary entry into the franchise and utilizes aspects of xenomorph lore from both Prometheus and the original Alien, including CGI Ian Holm. It proves that Weyland Corp. is and always was the real villain all along. So is AI, but apparently only on the hands of Weyland.

Four out of five stars.
