Oddity is equal parts ghost story and psychic mystery. When her twin sister dies, a blind woman embarks on a journey to find the real killer through spiritual means, with a side of witchcraft if that’s what you can even call it. Her path leads her to someone she knows. Because that’s how it usually works when dark gothic stories have a twist.
This offering from Shudder is a slow burn and an unsettling one. When it gets where it’s going, it leaves you wondering how people get away with their crimes so easily. But then they don’t get away with it do they? Stories like this usually let karma run its course.
The setting, an old house in a remote location, is the perfect place for a story like this to unfold. Part of me wishes we had gotten more of the woman’s shop where she sells artifacts from people who died tragic deaths. It is filled with taxidermy and possessed antiques. The shop would make the Warren’s room of demonic stuff look like a toy store. Alas, it’s only in the film twice for two short scenes.
Three and a half stars for this addition to a great year for horror movies.
