How do you out do one of the most memorable action movies to come out of the 90s? You don’t. But you can make a new movie with a similar premise and give it new heart with a great cast at its center. Twisters does just that.
When Kate (Daisy Edgar Jones) survives an accident during a tornado, she abandons her need to science the hell out of tornadoes and moves to NYC. But her friend lures her back in and she must overcome her PTSD and false assumptions she makes about those around her.
This film gets a lot of things right. First, it’s perfectly cast. Much like its predecessor, it’s populated by small characters who are both scientists and adventurers. They main not be main characters, but they are believable as the supporting cast of nerds with a side of crazy. Glen Powell brings his a game, adding complex emotions with facial expressions. He compliments Daisy Edgar Jones whose character holds nothing back. They bounce off each other like only enemies to friends could.
The story is interesting enough to keep you invested. For me, overcoming loss in a film adds a lot of emotion. More than one character has an arc here, and they find a way to work together. The human experience is on display more as the characters may be tornado chasers, the are also humanitarians in their own way, however small.
Special effects are convincing enough. The original used milk in the water so the rain was visible on screen. It relied more on practical effects, but the new one goes all in on the CGI. Fireworks in a tornado? No problem. A tornado in an oil refinery? Yep. It’s an action packed thrill ride with a short interlude at the end of the second act to Jones and Powell could find common ground.
Four out of five stars. A solid F4, and not just because swoon worthy Glen Powell makes me dizzy.
