This book follows Kit, a caregiver assigned to a notorious house on a cliff where murders happened 50 years ago. Like the woman she cares for, Lenora, Kit is suspected of killing someone she didn’t murder. As the house falls apart around them, Kit and Lenora must find the truth before it’s too late.
I hold my five star reviews for books that really impress me or keep me guessing, and boy does this one flip your assumptions on their head. And then does it again. A dizzying display of plot twists told through the lens of unreliable narrators right up to the final chapter.
The characters are both likable and flawed, a combination that makes them very relatable. The setting, though is what really makes this book sing. A gothic house on a cliff that is slowly crumbling into the sea, much like the truth that someone wants to stay hidden. Shades of The Fall of the House of Usher. The house is a presence of its own. Haunted by the past. Fragile. Much like the two main characters.
Had a hard time putting this one down. Five out of five stars.
