Movie Review – A Quiet Place: Day One

The third installment of this series is about Sam (Lupita Nyong’o), a woman dying in hospice care, as she travels to New York City from the facility she is waiting to die in. When the invasion starts, she finds herself trapped in a small theater with her cat and other survivors. The only thing on her mind is getting pizza at the place where she frequented with her now deceased father. Knowing her terminal status, Eric (Joseph Quinn) agrees to help her despite his own anxieties about the situation.

This film, much like the two that came before it, is less about the monster aliens and more about how their presence effects the people who are fighting to survive in utter silence. Sam and Eric, as well as other smaller characters, find themselves doing as much for others as for themselves.

Really, this film made me question what I would do for someone I hardly knew in the face of mortal harm. And what would I do in my final days on Earth regardless of what apocalypse unfolded around me? How would I choose to go out in this life? Day One is about the generosity we allow for our fellow humans. It’s about the best of us, and it is a welcome change from so many movies and television shows where unlikable characters prove that humanity is the monster (I’m looking at you, Negan).

This is the best film in the series to date. I’ll admit to shedding a tear or two. Lupita Nyong’o is a revelation, bringing so much feeling with her expressive acting that even in a movie with little dialogue, you feel everything she is feeling. I hope she continues acting in the horror genre because she adds so much to it.

Four out of five stars. See this at the theater, not because of the special effects or the horror, but for the genuine human experience on display. And for the best behaved cat in movie history.
