Movie Review – Inside Out 2

Inside Out 2 follows Riley, now a teenager, struggling with knowing her two best friends will not be at her high school in the fall so she tries to fit in with a few girls who will be there – other, older hockey players. In her head, Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear are joined by new emotions. Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Boredom throw Joy’s world out of alignment as both old and new emotions need to figure out how to keep Riley’s world from crashing.

My one and only beef with this film is that I wish they had done better with the title. Perhaps Teenager Inside Out would have been more creative. Or maybe Outside In. A play on the original movie’s title, but not the generic 2.

Anyone saying this film does not quite reach the emotional heights of the first film has never really struggled with anxiety. This movie encapsulates anxiety perfectly, right down to the spiral out of control that an anxiety attack brings on. Full credit to Pixar for giving us that. Embarrassment and Boredom are great too, but its Anxiety that really shows up full throttle.

Joy, Sadness, and company have to go on their own journey as they begin to realize that they can’t send all of Riley’s bad memories to the back of her mind. They have to let her learn from mistakes, and they have to learn from them as well. It’s called growing up.

As usual, Pixar gives us a visually breathtaking experience. No frame goes untouched. Kudos to the animators for making the skating in the hockey practices look so realistic. No easy task, I’m sure.

Four out of five stars for this great entry into the Pixar cannon.
