Movie Review – Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

This film follows Furiosa as a child (Alyla Brown) and then as a young adult (Anya Taylor-Joy). When she is taken from her home and witnesses the death of a loved one, she vows to exact her revenge and return home. This becomes difficult when her kidnapper and leader of a band of motorcycle riding rovers, Dr. Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), tries to overtake the Citadel. Left there, she rises among the ranks in silence to become an Imperator, and finds a way out.

That way out is a violent, dirty, action packed jaunt through the sandy desert. As with Fury Road, the stunts and practical effects are insane and precise. Miller at the top of his game here.

Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth are perfectly cast. It’s obvious that Hemsworth really enjoyed bringing this often crazed villain to life. Rounding out the top cast is Tom Burke who plays Jack, ruggedly handsome partner in crime to Furiosa.

The world building far surpasses that of Fury Road and that is what makes Furiosa a stand out prequel. Honestly, I think it’s superior to its predecessor in many ways. Hemsworth is a stark contrast to Tom Hardy’s Max in Fury Road as the male lead, and it’s obvious the cast got along here. No bitter battles over acting methods that happened between Theron and Hardy in the previous film.

And what happens to Dementus in the end is so brilliant that it’s one of the best revenge arcs I’ve seen in a while. Genius move, Miller.

Four and a half stars. See it on the biggest screen possible.
