Book Review – My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones

This novel follows Jade, a Native American teen living in a small Utah town. She is a loner obsessed with slasher movies. When a couple dead bodies turn up, she begins to realize she is in the middle of what she believes is a slasher movie cycle in which she must help the final girl, Letha, survive what is coming. Of course, no one believes her until everyone starts to die. By then, it is too late.

Stephen Graham Jones has written a novel that is wonderful if you have the patience to make it through. It is a bloody story filled with pop culture horror and slasher references that will fall flat if you haven’t been watching horror movies your whole life. I have, so I loved all the references.

This one takes its time, perhaps too much time, but the payoff at the end is worth it. Jade is one of those characters that you’ll either love or hate. She is so flawed that it is, at times, hard to root for her, but when you find out why she is the way she is, suddenly Jade makes sense. And the book comes together on its own.

Four out of five stars. Don’t give up on this one. The ending is worth muddling through the middle of the story that seems to take a bit too long.
