Book Review – The Hunter by Tana French

The Hunter is a sequel to The Searcher. It follows Cal and Trey as Trey’s father returns to town with a mysterious, rich businessman in search of gold. The two newcomers get the men around town to give them money in hopes of finding gold, but when one of the men ends up dead, Cal must figure out who the killer while trying to calm the tensions in town at the same time.

This book, told mostly through dialogue, felt like a departure from Tana French’s usual writing style. She is one of my favorite authors, so imagine my disappointment as I tried to muddle through conversations that went on for ten pages but gave little information. I felt like I was reading an Agatha Christie novel and not Tana French.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a bad book by any means. It is just told through dialogue, and much of the book is not told from Cal’s perspective. I didn’t find most of the perspectives and characters plotting against each other to be very interesting. By the final third of the book, I found myself forcing my way through.

Three out of five stars here, for this was not my favorite Tana French.
