Movie Review – Late Night with the Devil

From now on, when folks ask what my favorite found footage film is, the answer won’t be The Blair Witch Project. It’ll be Late Night with the Devil.

A grieving late night television host tries to recapture the heights of his career by having a psychic and a cult survivor possessed by something evil on his show. On Halloween, no less. As the night goes on, it becomes clear that his past isn’t done with him yet.

Filmed as if the cameras on set captured the entire event, this 1970s throwback hits on all levels. The acting is superb all around. The slow burn that leads to the shock of an ending is perfectly done. David Dastmalchian is, yet again, sublime. A standout performance.

Few movies surprise me. And when so many people rave about something, I often feel let down (Mad God, Skinamarink are prime examples). But there was no let down here. It’s a surprising film. A great addition to the found footage horror genre.

Four out of five stars.
