Movie Review: Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

I’m one of the few who likes the new Ghostbusters movies, so be prepared for a positive review here.

This film follows Egon Spengler’s daughter and grandchildren after they have movie to New York to continue the Ghostbusters legacy. Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) makes friends with a ghost with ulterior motives. Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) finds Slimer in the attic. Callie (Carrie Coon) tries to convince new husband, Gary (Paul Rudd) that he is a good dad. All this whilst ghostly events are unfolding around them. With the help of the original Ghostbusters, the family must find a way to save the world.

Most people will tell you that this rests heavily on nostalgia. And while it does to a certain extent, it really builds on the lore within the world of the Ghostbusters in allowing Winston to take on a primary role in the film as he is the Ghostbuster who kept up with making new tech for them to use. Ray and Peter are mostly there for comic relief, but there is a really nice moment between Ray and Phoebe, who is on the spectrum, when he helps her through a tough time. Dan Aykroyd is also on the spectrum in real life, so that was a good moment to include.

For me, this was really Phoebe’s story. Mckenna Grace, as always, is great. The friendship / love story between Phoebe and Melody (the ghost with ulterior motives) was the best part of the film for me. I’m not sure if it was meant to be romantic, but it felt that way to me and that made it all the more special. Phoebe’s arc as she navigates trying to find her place in the family, in life, is a beautiful piece of filmmaking.

The special effects are decent. The gags with Slimer were amusing by not annoying. And Kamail Nanjiani is surprisingly funny as the unsuspecting hero. I could watch him play that type of role forever. Great comedic timing.

Also, I love Carrie Coon in everything. She is great in this as the mother of two teen struggling with growing up in the face of having a new dad in a new home whilst the world ends around them.

Four out of five stars for me because I’ll never get tired of the Ghostbusters, young and old.
