2023 was a great year for cinema. So many stellar movies across so many genres. Had a hard time picking a favorite this year. I will say this, though. Oppenheimer is not my favorite film from last year. GASP! I know, but The Holdovers, Poor Things, Barbie, Anatomy of a Fall, and all things Lily Gladstone resonated more with me than Christopher Nolan’s epic. It is great, but aside from one category, I want the awards to be dispersed elsewhere. And, I have to say it one last time. The Iron Claw and Zac Efron deserved to be in the Best Picture/Best Actor race over Maestro and Bradley Cooper. But, alas, it did not turn out that way. Anyhoo, read on, cinephile, to find out my (some would say) divisive Oscar picks.
Best Supporting Actor
Will Win, Should Win: Robert Downy Jr. for Oppenheimer. Of those nominated, I don’t see anyone upsetting this win.
Best Supporting Actress
Will Win, Should Win: Da’Vine Joy Randolph, The Holdovers. No one is taking this away from her. It is much deserved. Her performance was unmatched.
Best Actor
Will Win: Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer
Should Win: Paul Giamatti, The Holdovers. There is a small chance Paul could pull out an upset here, which I fully support.
Best Actress
Will (and should) Win: Lily Gladstone, Killers of the Flower Moon (I think she will be the sole win for that film at this year’s Oscars)
Might Upset Win: Every single one of these women deserves a win. Really stacked field this year, and if anyone deserves the upset of Lily’s historic win, its Emma Stone for Poor Things.
Cinematography
Will Win, Should Win:Poor Things. Oppenheimer is tough competition, but Poor Things is more visually beautiful as a whole.
Animated Feature
Will Win, Should Win:Spider-Man, Across the Spider-verse. If anything pulls out an upset, it would be The Boy and the Heron.
Best Original Song
Will Win, Should Win: I’m Just Ken
Costume Design
Will Win, Should Win: Poor Things
Production Design
Will Win, Should Win: Poor Things
Adapted Screenplay
Will Win, Should Win: Barbie, I think Oppenheimer getting best picture will allow Greta Gerwig to win this category. I also believe Greta missing out on a director nod will play into it.
Original Screenplay: Will Win, Should Win:Anatomy of a Fall, though I would be more than okay with The Holdovers or Past lives pulling out a win here.
Best Director
Will Win: Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer
Should Win: Yorgos Lanthimos for Poor Things or Justine Triet for Anatomy of a Fall.
Best Picture
Will Win: Oppenheimer
Should Win: Poor Things, The Holdovers, Past Lives, Barbie. I’m torn here. So many good ones, hard to choose. But if I have to, I’m all in on The Holdovers winning.
