Diablo Cody does it again. She wrote a funny love story that will be misunderstood now but will be rediscovered in a decade by the people who didn’t understand how good it was the first go around. It happened with Jennifer’s Body, and it’ll happen with Lisa Frankenstein. Let me be the one to lead the cult following that will likely happen later on.
The story follows Lisa, a teenager in 1989 who lost her mom to a violent home invasion and now lives with her father, stepmom and stepsister. Her sister is the epitome of popular whilst Lisa is quiet and awkward. She is obsessed with the local abandoned cemetery. She makes a wish to be with one of the occupants, and a lightening storm makes the wish come true. Lisa, first horrified, eventually finds friendship in the creature she resurrected. Together, they murder a couple people so they can use the body parts to repair the creatures body, and find themselves in love and happily outcast.
Essentially, the film is Sweeney Todd meets Heathers. It is all neon coated ’80s soaked in blood. The music. The wardrobe. The big hair. The stepsister named Taffy. Carla Gucino in a turquoise leotard. It goes all in, and is better for it. Diablo Cody, known more for the Oscar nominated Juno than for Jennifer’s Body, brings her usual wit and smart dialogue. It is why she is one of my favorite screenwriters. Give this woman more movies to write.
Four and a half out of five stars, for I believe this one will have a substantial cult following and it deserves to. It’s brilliant. Funny. And did an interesting take on one of my favorite books (yes, the original Frankenstein) without being derivative.
