I showed up to the theater all in on this one. On the bad CGI. On Henry Cavill’s terrible haircut. On the obvious twist and premise. On the dance sequences. On Bryce Dallas Howard, because I’ll watch anything with Bryce Dallas Howard.
Argylle follows Elly Conway, an author of popular spy novels, who is drawn into the world of actual spying because her books tell stories that actually happened. She doesn’t understand why until she is told that (spoiler, but not really since the premise was announced in 2021) she has amnesia and she is the actual spy. As her memory returns over time, she must choose which side is the one she wants to be on.
There is a twist to this story about ever fifteen minutes. It may seem like a lot, but it only adds to the absurdity of it all. Somehow, even with all the bad special effects (I think it may have been intentional) and the borderline satire (I think its unintentional). I found myself enjoying the movie in spite of it all. Even when Bryce Dallas Howard straps knives to the bottom of her shoes and “skates” over oil covered floor to beat up several attackers. Yep. Really. And her dress never gets an ounce of oil on it.
If you go into this one knowing it’ll be over the top and that is the point, then just sit back and enjoy the ride. I certainly did. But I also enjoyed the Kinsmen movies if that tells you anything. Just have fun. The actors obviously did when making it because they all fully commit, especially John Cena who makes the most of his five minutes of screen time.
Three out of five stars for sheer audacity of making an intentionally bad movie and having fun with it.
