There were few 2023 movies I was looking forward to more than Poor Things. It didn’t disappoint.
The story follows Bella (Emma Stone), a pregnant woman who committed suicide only to have her body found by a scientist, Godwin Baxter (Willem Defoe) who cut the baby out of her and put the babies brain in her head. He revives her using electricity (yes, its a take on Frankenstein) and studies her growth as she learns to walk, talk, and live.
Soon, Bella wants to leave the gothic mansion in which she has been “born” and begs to leave. Enter Duncan (Mark Ruffalo) who offers to take her on an adventure. Godwin allows her to leave, though he soon misses his creation. Bella finds awaking through sexual pleasure, food, music, and just about anything she can experience.
I won’t tell you the whole plot for this movie deserves to be experienced without knowing much. Every second of it is filled with creative imagery and hilarious dialogue. There is not a second of it where you aren’t feasting your eyes and ears on something. Every character unique. Every location inventive. Every costume stunning. Even the music is interesting.
Emma Stone fully commits to this. And she is absolutely brilliant. I see a best actress Oscar in her future for this. Every moment she is occupying the screen she is Bella. The performance never wavers and it is unlike anything she has ever done. I sense that this was as much of a journey for Stone as it was for Bella.
Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo are great too. I’m not a huge Ruffalo fan, but he really impressed me here. Even smaller characters stand out, and Kathryn Hunter as Swiney, the brothel owner in Paris, stands out most of all. Perfect cast.
Five out of five stars for me on this one. Go see this on the big screen, guys. You’ll not regret it.
