Movie Review – The Holdovers

When a prep school teacher is tasked with staying over the holidays, he finds himself with an intelligent but damaged troublemaker. The two surprisingly bond, and find out each others darkest secrets.

Paul Giamatti is brilliant as the lead, even with his character having a glass eye, making his crosseyed expressions in some scenes off putting. It only adds to his character, and he lives every minute of it. Da’Vine Joy Randolph is exceptional as the grieving mother who cooks in the cafeteria. And Dominic Sessa takes the material and makes it his own.

Alexander Payne is at the top of his game here. He made a great holiday film that will make it into my yearly rotation for sure.
