I’ll preface this by saying I haven’t watched much of the MCU serialized shows on Disney Plus. Haven’t kept up on the movies. So I went into The Marvels just wanting it to be good without having to invest weeks watching other content.
The story follows Carol Danvers as she is suddenly thrown into a situation where she switches locations when she uses her powers. The switch only happens when Monica Rambeau or Kamala Khan use their powers. The three soon realize they need to work together to defeat their new foe, a Kree leader set on revenge after Carol took out the AI that controlled her in her previous film.
I won’t give any major spoilers, but two things really thrilled me with this. The first involved Carol’s relationship with a Prince on a world where the language is singing. It’s genius. The second is how they handle Goose, the alien cat who spews tentacles. I can’t spoil it for you, but there’s a brilliant sequence which uses creature horror in a surprising way. Refreshing for the MCU.
I thought this film has a lot of heart and story going for it. Brie Larson is great. Iman Vellani and Teynoha Parris bring new energy. Nia DaCosta directs a funny, heart warming film that I think people will discover on Disney Plus later and realize it has a lot to offer. Bring in more female directed content, Marvel. The female perspective is worth exploring.
Four out of five stars because it’s the first film since The Eternals that made me excited to watch what the MCU was up to.
