Movie Review – Saw X

What can you say about a franchise that is ten movies into the series? I wasn’t expecting much, but the return of Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith made for a watchable film.

Jigsaw goes to Mexico for a medical procedure to cure his cancer. He is duped, however, and he finds all involved to have his revenge. Or, to teach his lessons as he like to believe he is doing.

The strength of this film is the first act before it gets gory. He is so filled with hope that you can’t help root for him even though you know the outcome (his character dies in movie 3).

Once he begins his game, the film shows its true colors. Self imposed torture. Gore. Characters begging for mercy. And a morally corrupt character that gets their due in a twisty third act. So, as a Saw film, it succeeds even if the torture aspects wore thin after movie three or four.

Three out of five stars for me, mainly because that first act is probably the best piece of film making in the entire series.
