John David Washington is Joshua, an undercover operative in search of Nirmata – the rumored father of all A.I. When his wife, Maya and unborn child die in an attack by his own government, Joshua cares not for the plight of the American war against A.I.
Five years later, they come looking for him and ask for his help with the promise that Maya is alive. He agrees and Joshua finds the weapon feared by the Americans, and it’s a child. The first A.I. that can grow, it’s abilities growing with it.
Joshua’s single minded goal of finding Maya at all costs have him chased by both the American military and A.I. police as he asks for the child’s help finding his wife.
At its heart, this film is about love. What a person would do for one last moment with their person. It’s also a cautionary tale about the upsides and downsides of A.I., and how it’s creation could be humanity’s undoing as they destroy themselves and their planet. Humans can be the worst monsters, after all.
Aside from the engaging story, this film is perfectly cast. John David Washington was always just okay for me before, but now I’m a believer. Alison Janney is great too as a military leader, a role I never thought I’d see her in. Cinematography and special effects are immersive and top notch.
See this one on the biggest screen possible. It’s worth it. Wonderful addition to the sci-fi genre, and it has a lot to say about humanity.
