It was the cleverly designed cover that drew me to this book. I’m a sucker for animal bones. The story within was a horrific story about family ties and an unyielding evil presence.
The town of Saint-Ferdinand is plagued by a serial killer, or so many townsfolk believe. After they catch the would be killer, the deaths continue. Then, a teenager finds an monster in her shed and traps it there. Soon, she realizes that any deals made with it will have dire consequences. And she isn’t alone in that realization. As the story unravels, the townsfolk discover that generations of their town had dealt with this monster.
I won’t give much away, because this story needs to be read to be believed. It’s a complex story that deals with the supernatural as well as personal inner demons of the characters.
I’ll admit, in the beginning I thought I was reading a cop mystery with some gore and monsters. When the story shifted to the teens, I almost gave up. But I stuck with it and I’m glad I did. Once it got to where it was going, it’s a decent read. A little long winded in spots (I feel the same about Stephen King’s IT so that isn’t necessarily a bad thing).
If gore and stories with a large of characters and an immersive plot are your thing, give this one a shot. This horror story gets 4 out of 5 stars from me for sheer audacity in the story it’s trying to tell.
