Movie Review: Meg 2: The Trench

How on Earth would you top The Meg, a film that was such surprising fun that a sequel was inevitable? By Hollywood standards, you throw everything you’ve got at it and hope for the best.

Meg 2 finds our characters turned into eco warriors, except for Suyin who has passed away leaving behind her daughter, Meiying, and presumably Jonas (Jason Statham) who doesn’t seem too grieved that she isn’t around anymore though he still cares for her kid. When Jonas, Mac (Cliff Curtis), DJ (Page Kennedy), and a few new faces go down into the trench for research purposes, they discover that someone has been building a deep sea station to harvest rare minerals – and that Meiying stowed herself away so that she could tag along.

But, in an obvious twist you’ll see coming a mile away, someone on their team has betrayed them. They get stranded by an explosion and have to find a way to the surface. Three megs follow them, along with some dinosaurs and an underused giant octopus.

I’ll say this now. I enjoyed this film. Not as much as the first, but I had fun watching it. It is a dumb movie consisting of a lot of one liners, half of which fall flat, but it’s a movie about dinosaurs and sharks attacking vacationers so it is exactly what I expected.

Would I have wished that they concentrated more on the eco warrior part of the story and evolved it with some character development? Yes. Could they have evolved the meg in captivity storyline into something more meaningful? Sure. Would I have liked to see less dinosaurs and more of the giant octopus? Absolutely. Could there have been a storyline about Meiying grieving her mother and pushing Jonas away, forcing him to reconnect with her? For sure.

But, whatever. I’m adding this to my pile of bad shark movies because there is a special place in my heart for them. Move over Deep Blue Sea and Shark Night. You have some new company.

Three out of five shark’s teeth for me on this one for sheer dumb summer movie fun.
