Movie Review: Asteroid City

Wes Anderson is stylistically great. Even when I don’t get much out of one of the stories he is telling (The French Dispatch, The Darjeeling Limited), I find how he makes movies to be really beautiful. He can be very hit or miss story wise, but I love The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, and The Grand Budapest Hotel. Didn’t really know what to expect from his newest entry, but I was looking forward to it nonetheless.

Asteroid City is a tiny town in the desert that exists primarily because of the crater from a crashed asteroid. When the town holds an event celebrating the crash of the crater, the parents of a group of gifted children arrive, kids in tow, so their kids can accept science awards. That is until an alien crashes the party and takes the asteroid back home with it. The government quarantines the town for a week, leaving the new residents to converse with each other and the genius kids to circumvent the authority of the government guys holding them hostage.

Asteroid City is exactly what you expect from Wes Anderson, a large cast of characters having monotonous conversations about the plot, with added blown out cinematography and the added context of it being about a play instead of it just happening in the real world.

Scarlott Johansson was the standout for me. I remember when she was cast as Janet Leigh when they made a film about the making of Psycho, and I thought it was a poor choice until I saw the film. She did great then, and her performance in this just erased any lingering doubts that she could do a role like playing an actress like Janet Leigh. She really brought the old 1950’s style of Hollywood glamor to her role, and I loved it.

Personally, I loved it. Not quite as good as Grand Budapest Hotel, but it makes my top five when it comes to his films. I was never bored, and laughed out loud a few times when the film was extra meta. If you love Anderson, you’ll love this. If you aren’t a fan, you won’t like this. Not that that will surprise anyone.

Four out of four stars for me on Asteroid City for sheer meta Bryan Cranston gull and that Jeff Goldblum cameo. I’m laughing just thinking about it.
