Oscar Picks 2023

What a year at the movies. While I’m bummed The Woman King, The Northman, and She Said didn’t get more Oscar love this year, Sarah Polley missing out on a director nod, and Lashana Lynch and Viola Davis should be represented in the acting categories, I’m impressed by the films that are represented. The sound and visual effects awards will likely go to Avatar: The Way of Water or Top Gun: Maverick.

Best Animated Feature: Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, but it may go to Pinocchio which was equally outstanding.

Cinematography: Empire of Light, though this really should have gone to The Northman who wasn’t even nominated.

Best Actor: Brendan Fraser gave a heart wrenching performance in The Whale so I”m hoping he wins, though Austin Butler could steal this away from him.

Best Actress: Michelle Yeoh, and it’s been a long time coming. She deserves it.

Supporting Actor: Ke Huy Quan, and I’m hoping he isn’t the only win for Everything Everywhere all at Once.

Supporting Actress: Angela Bassett. How she doesn’t have an Oscar by now is a shocking. This may swing Jamie Lee Curtis’s way, and I would be equally happy with that outcome.

Original Screenplay: The Banshees of Inisherin, I don’t see this winning in may other places so I betting it wins here.

Adapted Screenplay: Sarah Polley for Women Talking. Really, she should also have gotten in for directing. That oversight might get her a win here.

Best Director: This could go to Todd Field for Tar or to the Daniels for Everything Everywhere all at Once. I’m hoping for a win for the Daniels.

Best Picture: this feels completely up in the air, but I think it is really between Everything Everywhere all at Once, Tar, and The Banshees of Inisherin. I’m a huge fan of Everything Everywhere all at Once, so that’s what I’m going to call right now.
