I have a soft spot for rom-coms set in tropical locations as long as they are done right. Putting George Clooney and Julia Roberts together in Bali hits all the right notes.
When Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) falls in love with a local in Bali on a celebratory college trip with a friend (Billie Lourd), they decide to get married. Her divorced parents Georgia and David (Roberts and Clooney) aren’t hip on the idea and agreeing to stop the wedding is the only thing the two have in common. Georgia even has her boyfriend Rob in tow, and he’s half her age.
The film is pleasantly predictable as Georgia and David realize that their daughter knows more about love than they do. The supporting cast is funny, if not under used. Billie Lourd deserved a bit better, but now I want to see her and Kaitlyn Dever in a road trip adventure of some kind.
I laughed out loud so many times during this, especially at how well they used their one and only f-bomb. Bali is a bit too sparkly and pretty, but it fits the mood of the film so it works.
I give it 3 out of 5 stars. Not rewriting any rom-com rules here, but adding a sweet story about two people who are still very much in love with each other.
