Nocturna brings together two unlikely heroes to defeat an ancient evil.
Finn is a thief who uses her magic to change her face to mimic other people so she cannot be caught. In her past, a man who made her do terrible things. She is alone in a world filled with people she doesn’t trust.
Alfie is the second son of the King and is thrown into being the heir after the untimely death of his older brother. He spent months away from home searching for answers to his brothers death, but upon his return, he finds he’s relationships strained. Before he can fully commit to being the heir, he needs one last chance to find a clue about what happened to his dead brother.
At a dangerous card game of chance, Finn and Alfie both want the prize; a collection of banned books filled with history and magic. Finn simply wants them for herself, but Alfie believes they hold the answer to bringing his brother back from the dead. They unwittingly set of a series of events that would tie them together forever.
This book is filled with complex characters, magic, and evil gods that populate a vibrant world that feels both foreign and familiar. It sucks you in like your lungs breathe in air. I couldn’t put this one down.
Maya Motayne is a brilliant novelist, and this was only her first. I can’t wait to see what she creates next, and I hear there is a sequel to this. Color me excited.
