Minnesota State Fair 2021

I hadn’t planned on attending the State Fair this year for obvious reasons (pandemic in case it wasn’t). Then, at the last minute, I signed up for free Grandstand tickets as a lark. I didn’t think I would win since I never win anything, but as fate would have it, I ended up with two free tickets to see Kevin Costner’s country rock band, Modern West. It was chilly, only 62 degrees, and it drizzled relentlessly, but it didn’t keep me from enjoying the night. In fact, it kept the crowd small at the show so I could social distance and still be close to the stage. Costner’s band, more rock than country, was surprisingly entertaining and Costner himself is everything I expected. Down to Earth and a bit of an old fashioned romantic cowboy.

In a normal year, I attend the fair multiple times so I can try many of the new foods offered. This year, I had my two faves, apple cider and cheese curds, plus two new items. I stopped by the Green Mill stand and tried the new Pizza Lucy which is sausage, cheese, and pepperoni wrapped in dough and deep fried. It is served with a side of pizza sauce. It is brilliantly delicious. The second new item I tried was the Blue Raspberry Blitzed pie from Sara’s Tipsy Pies. It looked like they battered a smurf and deep fried it, but it was tasty nonetheless. It could have used more filling, but the combination of raspberries, apples, and vodka was the perfect combination of tartness and sweet. I topped it all off with a $7 lemonade and, for the first time ever, I skipped the roasted corn stand. I was simply too full.

Before I went into the concert, I stopped by the animal barns really quick. The chickens always lift my spirits. I was slightly disappointed that I missed the bunny rabbits earlier in the week, but maybe next year life on Earth will be less scary and I can see them then. I said hello to some goats too, one of which tried to playfully eat my bag. That one small, funny moment erased what had been a stressful week.

The second Friday of the fair is always a night I try to attend because that is when the orchid flower show starts. For those who don’t know, the State Fair has different events on different days so there is always something new to see. The orchid show didn’t disappoint. If you have been following along with my blog for a while (thank you!), you know how much I love flowers.

After the concert there was a viewing of Field of Dreams which I didn’t stick around for. I was simply too cold and wet, but I did make my way over to the midway on my way out. I so rarely hang around the fair after nine at night, that I found myself choking on pot smoke, avoiding drunk college kids, and being walked into by teens still full of the unawareness of youth. It was my cue to leave. I left the fair with a fully belly and lifted spirits.
