Oscar Picks 2020

Here are my Oscar picks for this year. I’ll probably disagree with many of the winners tonight, but that’s not a surprise since Midsommar, Rocketman, and US aren’t nominated for acting of best picture.

Best Picture
Should Win: Joker or Once Upon a Time In Hollywood. Really, I’ll just be happy if it’s not The Irishman (sooooooo boring & been there, done that).
Will Win: 1917 (Parasite has an outside shot of winning, which I’ll fully support).

Adapted Screenplay
Should Win: Little Women, Greta Gerwig
Will Win: Little Women, Greta Gerwig – The Academy should give her this, it’s well earned. She should also be nominated in the director category. Scorsese doesn’t deserve a nomination for making ANOTHER mob boss movie.

Original Screenplay
Should Win: Knives Out (Rian Johnson) or Parasite (Bong Joon Ho)
Will Win: Once Upon a Time In Hollywood (Quentin Tarantino). I’m not a huge fan of the third act of this film suddenly having voice over by Kurt Russell. It’s jarring for me.

Best Actor
Should Win: Joaquin Phoenix, Joker
Will Win: Joaquin Phoenix, Joker

Best Actress
Should Win: Lupita Nyong’o for US, but since she isn’t nominated I’ll go with Charlize Theron, Bombshell
Will Win: Renee Zellweger, Judy

Best Supporting Actor
Should Win: Brad Pitt
Will Win: Brad Pitt (Joe Pesci might sneak in, but I think it’s Brad’s year).

Best Supporting Actress
Should Win:  Margot Robbie for Bombshell.
Will Win: Laura Dern, Marriage Story. Not a fan of that film. Thought it was populated by unlikable characters, and it was a little longwinded.

Animated Feature
Should Win: Klause (stylistically it’s stunning).
Will Win: Toy Story 4

Cinematography
Should Win: The Lighthouse (how is Midsommar not nominated in this category?)
Will Win: 1917

Best Director
Should Win: Sam Mendes, 1917 or Todd Phillips, Joker
Will Win: Sam Mendes, 1917

Original Score
Should Win: Joker, Hildur Guonadottir
Will Win: Joker, Hildur Guonadottir

Foreign Film
Should Win: Parasite
Will Win: Parasite (I mean, it’s amazing)

Original Song
Should Win: I’m Gonna Love Me Again, Rocketman, Elton John
